Philip Smyth

Phil is an award winning physicist and an engineer, loving all things weird, wonderful and explosive. He is a writer and presenter with Ireland’s national broadcaster RTÉ having worked on over 160 shows like Insiders, Swipe TV, The Mountain and Pop Goes the Weekend.

The Serious History stuff.
After studying Applied Physics in Dublin City University, Phil went on to do his postgraduate research in Mechanical Engineering. Here he focused on the effects of computer based learning on memory retention and understanding in undergraduates. During his studies at DCU, Phil was awarded two European Space Agency Scholarships to spend time at their ESTEC site in Noordwijk and also in Houston Texas and Japan.
Systems Biology Ireland (SBI) came calling so Phil upped and moved to UCD to take up the position of E&O Manager for the new Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) centre. SBI’s education program was eventually awarded the National Educational Lab of the Year in 2013.
Phil has also worked in the Access centre in UCD which works with children from disadvantaged areas around improving their educational options and attainment as well as support them once they have reached 3rd level. It was after this time that Phil’s presenting career took off with him landing the lead presenter roles on several children’s science shows including “Insiders”.

At the minute.
Currently Phil is the Head of Cool Planet Experience based at Powerscourt House and Gardens in Wicklow, which is due to open in 2018. Here he runs the education and engagement program. It’s a great place to have some fun and learn but it is a necessity to inform people of the importance of climate change and what they can do to really make a difference. He is the National Co-Director of Thesis in 3 (Tin3)
The potentially interesting bits.

When not working, Phil goes to extremes to relax. This means you can find him flying around on a segway, jetski or a horse but not necessarily at the same time. He loves all sports and is probably a bit too competitive but he tries his best to hide it. Video games, golf, scuba diving and Lego are amongst his favourite things with him winning a national championship in one, although you’ll have to guess which. His puns are the worst and best which is the only reason that his girlfriend puts up with him. Always eager to have a chat please do give him a shout!
